Clement was born in April 1852 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on May 2nd, 1852 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Clement's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Davenport.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Whitehead. He had four brothers and six sisters, named James, Samuel, George, Richard, Mary, Emma, Elizabeth, Harriet, Hannah and Levinia.  He was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
