Mary was born in June 1846 in Whitefield.1  Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Mary Davenport.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Whitehead. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Clement, James, Samuel, George, Richard, Emma, Elizabeth, Harriet, Hannah and Levinia.  She was the oldest of the eleven children.
