John was born in January 1788 in Little Lever and his baptism took place on January 20th, 1788 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  John's father was Thomas Heaton and his mother was Ellen Thornley. He had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Meadowcroft and Alice.  He was the youngest of the four known children.
