Mary was born in 1825 in Pilkington.1  Mary's father was Peter Mather and her mother was Sarah Hall.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Melling. She had a brother and a sister, named James and Mary.  She was the youngest of the three children. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Squire, Maria, Ann and Elizabeth.
