Elizabeth was born on January 14th, 1838 in Pilkington and her baptism took place on May 6th, 1838 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).1 2  Elizabeth's father was Peter Mather and her mother was Sarah (Sally) Barlow.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Melling. She had a brother and two sisters, named Squire, Maria and Ann.  She was the youngest of the four children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named James, Mary and Mary.
