Richard was born in September 1756 in Prestwich and his baptism took place on September 26th, 1756 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).1  Richard's father was Robert Madther and his mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Ripson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Francis, Robert, John, Samuel, James, Sally and Rachel.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
