Birth Notes
65 in 1841 at Walmersley-cum-Shuttleworth, Bury
74 in 1851 (census), Born Bury
74 when died Nov 1851
The 1851 census is quite specific about James's wife Mary being born in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, so it is equally likely that Bury is the correct place of birth for James. However, there is no James Mather birth record in Bury 1775-79
James was probably baptised 1777 or 1778. However, there are no matching records for Bury, and no other local records (except Greater Manchester). Rivington and Hindley baptisms seem too far away for someone who is described as from Bury. He may exaggerate his age to be younger than his wife, but not older!
