Richard's father was John Mather and his mother was Alice Mather.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Pendlebury. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Peter, Samuel, Martha, Mary and Alice.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 39 on May 20th, 1835 in Radcliffe.  He was buried in May 1835 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).²
