James was born on October 17th, 1790 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on November 28th, 1790 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).1  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Alice Mather.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Pendlebury. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Peter, Richard, Samuel, Martha, Mary and Alice.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 61 in July 1852 in Radcliffe.  He was buried on July 14th, 1852 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).2
