Mary was born in 1885 in Radcliffe. Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Mary Hellwood.  Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Davenport and Mary Ann Mather. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, James, Sarah, Mary and Martha.  She was the youngest of the six children.
