In 1841 and 1851, James lived with his parents. In 1851 his father James was a major employer of "100 hands". By 1871 James ran the Calico Bleching business, now employing 120.
From 1851 to past 1871, James lived at the big Crow Oaks House, Pilkington. There were also several (let) cottages.
In 1855 James's brother William Henry (and probably the rest of the family) was living at Crow Oaks.
