James Mather

James was born on January 19th, 1826 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on April 9th, 1826 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).¹²

James' father was James Mather and his mother was Martha Whitaker. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Melling. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Edward, Charles, Joseph, Martha, Mary and Mary. He was the second oldest of the nine children.

General Notes
- In 1841 and 1851, James lived with his parents. In 1851 his father James was a major employer of "100 hands". By 1871 James ran the Calico Bleching business, now employing 120.
  
  From 1851 to past 1871, James lived at the big Crow Oaks House, Pilkington. There were also several (let) cottages.
  
  In 1855 James's brother William Henry (and probably the rest of the family) was living at Crow Oaks.
