James was born in 1580 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place there on June 5th, 1589.1  James' father was Gabriell Mather and his mother was Elizabeth.  His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and <unknown>. He had four brothers and a sister, named Raphell, Zacherie, Abraham, Gabriell and Dorothie.  He was the oldest of the six children.

‌James and Sara were married in a religious ceremony in 1613 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).2  The family line is yet to be completed.
