James was born on February 13th, 1807 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on March 29th, 1807 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).1  James' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Betty Lord.  His paternal grandparents were Jacob Mather and Catharine Ainsworth; his maternal grandparents were Jeremiah Lord and Betty Stanfield. He had a brother and a sister, named Jeremy and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 70 in December 1877 in Radcliffe.  He was buried on December 8th, 1877 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).2

‌James and Alice were married in a religious ceremony on January 13th, 1833 at St. Mary (Deane) witnessed by Abraham Boardman & Robert Yates.4   They had two sons and a daughter, named James, Samuel and Sarah.

‌James and Alice were married in a religious ceremony on November 4th, 1840 at St. Peter's (Bolton).4  They had two sons named Samuel and James.
