John was born in March 1735 in Outwood and his baptism took place on March 5th, 1735 at St. Saviour (Ringley).1  John's father was James Mather Jnr and his mother was Mary. He had five brothers and two sisters, named James, Miles, Miles, Mary, Thomas, Anne and Alice.  He was the oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother named Lomas.
