Edwin's father was William Henry Mather and his mother was Mary Ann Walker.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Martha Whitaker. He had a brother and three sisters, named Walter, Francis, Gertrude and Edith.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 62 on January 13th, 1922 in Glamorganshire.²
