Charles was born in 1826 in Radcliffe.1  Charles' father was Thomas Bowden and his mother was Elizabeth (Betsy) Lord (Pendlebury). He had two brothers named Thomas and Luke.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Mary.
