North's father was Richard Madther and his mother was Betty Siddal.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Betty (Elizabeth) Ripson. He had six brothers and a sister, named Martin, Jesse, Haide, Hardy, Samuel, Hardy and Alice.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
