Samuel

65
Another Samuel Mather from Bolton, who's father was Robert, as was his second son (so named after his grandfather).
1 Oct 1815, Samuel Mather, a Fuller, Bachelor, married Alice Greenhalgh, a spinster at St Mary the Virgin, Bury. Witnesses were James Milnes and Thomas Crompton.
In 1841, Samuel, 45 (and Alice, 45), recorded as a Fuller when John was born. Fuller, a worker who cleanses wool through the process of fulling. They lived at Cresent Row, North Bury and in 1841 had 6 children.
WARNING: There's another Samuel Mather who was an Iron Moulder with sons William, Ralph and George.

Samuel's father lived in Dean in 1793 where sister Maria was born, but by 1795 was in Great Bolton. Nanny's baptism of 1799 shows the family in Ainsworth parish.
Samuel lived in Halliwell. Sons Isaac and John both married at Deane (1834 and 1837) with Halliwell recorded as the abode for John.
From 1818 to after 1829, another Samuel Mather and wife Ellen was a Moulder, living at 63 (and later 67) Spring Gardens (see trade directories), then Dawes St in 1841. This was not our Samuel who was a weaver at Waterloo in 1841, although his son John did work at the Iron Works and sister Maria was at Spring Gardens in 1843.
Recorded as John Mather's father on his wedding certificates of 1837 and 1843
Samuel Kay was witness to Elizabeth's wedding to John Mather in 1843. Still living in Little Bolton in 1851.
In 1841, Samuel and Alice (both 50) were at Waterloo. Four children; Alice (20), Happy (15), Samuel (15) and George (13) were with them as well as James Tyldsley (probably a lodger). At this time, there’s a population of over 613K, about 59K were cotton weavers, and 800 silk weavers. About 2,600 are involved with spinning.
In 1851, Samuel and Alice (both 60) were at 4 Simpson Street (by Waterloo Fold) with son George (21), daughter Happy Barrow (28) and granddaughter Maria Barrow (aged 7). His son Isaac was at No. 1 Simpson Street. Samuel was from "Great Bolton" and Alice from Turton.
1 May 1854, Samuel Mather of 4 Simpson Street died, aged 64. Samuel and his mother Happy (Cheetham when died) are buried at the Wesleyan Methodist, Bolton.

James Mather and Happy Lomax were Samuel's parents, but which James?. James (b.1769) son of James; or James (b.1761) son of Richard and Ann; or James (b.1763) son of Elias and Mary ... or another? James son of Richard fits well, both parents using Bank Street and Isaac being the first sons of Richard and Samuel.
James probably lived at Toppings, Turton (unconfirmed, based on brothers Isaac and Solomon.
James was 29 when he married Happy. He may have been married before, quite possibly to Betty Lyon who died in 1789, aged only 20. James had 1 or 2 young children to care for and needed a wife quickly. James signed his own name on both marriages, although the signatures are not a good match at least he was educatred and sign his name (5 years apart).
James and his future wife Happy were both baptised at Bank Street, Bolton although James was from Turton. Richard and Ann Mather had only been married a few months, so this may be why!
In 1799, James and Happy were living in Ainsworth (Hainsworth) when daughter Nanny was baptised. This is about 2 miles SE of Harwood.
TO DO: Record of Sun Fire Office: MS 11936/359/555330 - Insured: John Browne and William Holden, Bolton, Lancashire, shopkeepers. This is James, son of John and Ann of Breightmet. James's grandparents were Betty and Thomas of Little Leveer (he and Mathha were buried with them). There is another James, son of Jane Mather of L.L. also born in 1803.
In 1833, James married Matha Austin. John (assumed to be his father) was a witness, normally a role for a brother, not father.
In 1841, James (a carter) and Martha (both 35) were at Spring Row, Breightmet with John (9), Elizabeth (7), Ellin (2). James and Martha also had James Livesey (20) with them. James's father, John (b.~1781), a farmer, was living nearby, aged 60.
Another James & Martha Mather nee Kay, a silk weaver from Entwistle had William Kay (48) with them in 1841.

In 1826 James (a weacer) had a bastard child born upon the body of Alice Hartley of Chorley and was ordered to pay 1s 6d per week (plus other costs) towards her maintenance. He married her two years later (see attached images of the orders).
1835-39 (when Eliz and Mary baptised) James was living at 1 Commission Street, Bolton
In 1841, James, a cotton weaver, and Alice (40 & 35) were at Back Blackburn Street with daughters Hannah, Betsy and Mary (12, 7 & 2).
In Feb 1846, they were at Commision Street when Emma died (aged 15mo) and buried at Bolton Holy Trinity.
In 1851, James and Alice (50 & 48) were at 1 Commission Street (next to Stanley Street), Western Bolton with Hannah, Elizabeth, Mary and Wright (22, 17, 11 & 4).
In 1861, James and Alice (59 & 58) were still at 1 Commission Street with Elizabeth (27), Mary (21) and Wright (14).
In 1871. James Mather (69, Widow) was still at the house at Commission Street with daughters Elizabeth and (37) Mary (31)
1787 - 1841
James
Mather
54
54
James was born about 9 months after his parents married (before Sept if 54 when died)..
James & Rachel have a DNA match to Paul Mather, but NOT me.
James's first son is also James, and both were farmers at Entwistle, probably the same farm !
In 1804, a Private James Mather, enlisted in the army, aged about 18. He was discharged in 1818. This is another!
Weaver when children got baptised (e.g. Charles).
In Jun 1841, James and Rachel (both 54) are farmers at Sunnyside, Entwistle. Also shown as farmer from Entwistle on son Isaac's marriage in 1839 (so possibly the wrong marriage). With them were their younger children Nancy, Jane, Sarah, Andrew and Maria (24, 22, 18, 17, & 11), and also two illegitimate grandchildren Abel and John (5mo & 1mo).
3 Sep 1841, James Mather died of paralysis (i.e. stroke). Jenny Mather of Entwistle was present at the death (of her father).
In 1892, his youngest daughter Maria remaried (aged 63). She recorded her father as John (not James) Mather, a Farmer.
1792 - 1879
Alice
Mather
87
87
Alice appears to be born about 1788, although only Turton baptism is for 1792, so parents are unconfirmed..
9 Sep 1810, Alice MATHER, a spinster married James Mather at St Peter's, Bolton.
This is the only Alice found born in Bolton of similar age. She appears to have no (baptised) brothers or sisters, which is strange as she was born 13 years after her parents marriage (so could be wrong birth record or records lost, or a widow).
Could she be a widower, married before Samuel in 1810 (after 1804)? Cant be Alice Makinson that married Nathan Mather in 1809 or Alice Calderbank married Thomas Mather in 1805 as they had a long and fruitfull marriages. There are no other candidates for an Alice from Turton.
Alice, wife is present on 1841 and 1851 census with Samuel and family.
The 1851 census shows Samuel and Alice (both 60) at 4 Simpson Street, was from Turton. Her son George (21, a Collier), daughter Happy Barrow (married, 28, piecer) and grandaughter Maria Barrow (7) were living with them.
In 1871, Alice (82) was a boarder at 67 Blackbank Street, living with her daughter Happy and Phineas Shuttleworth and family. 3 doors away at No 73 was her son Samuel and Ann Mather. Between them at No 71 was James Cunliffe Hamer and his wife Happy Hamer. How is this other Happy person related?
1792 - 1872
James

There's a James that married Ellen Mercer in 1797, and had their children baptised at Dukes Alley Chapel (NC) but this is obviously another. From 1806, James's father Solomon also started using Bank Street.
28 Nov 1836, James married Mary Heaton. Wright Crompton, b.~1810 the L.B. Blacksmith was witness.
In 1841, James and Mary (45 & 50) are at Poaket, Deane.
James Mather is on the 1841, 1851, 1861 (married to Mary) at Pocket, Rumworth, and 1871 census (widowed), born Turton with the correct age.
In 1861, James and Mary (68 & 69) are at Pocket, Rumworth. James and Betsey Banks (24 & 26) are neighbours, with a possible DNA trail..
The 1871 census also shows James (78, Wid) is with his sister Ann (50) born Hall-i’th’-Wood (the same as brother Solomon). Ann Scott (41) is a Lodger.
James (45) and Mary (50) ware living at Pocket, Rumworth, (There's a Pocket Nook Rd at Chew Moor), Rumworth in 1841, 1851 and his wife Mary died there in 1871.
John Mather (15, MS) was the only other Mather in Rumworth in 1841. He was probably James's son from an earlier marriage.
1774 - 1848
James
Mather
73
73
James may be born Rivington as baptism date matches. However, I would expect to see a Stephen in the family. Burials of his daughters show he lived in Little Bolton. James Mather, born 25 Oct 1774, son of William Gresgon and Elizabeth Mather seems more likely, as baptised at Bank Street Unitarian.
Marriage to Ellen shows "James Mathers" is a joiner, but James Mather (65) a Weaver in 1841 married to Charlotte (61) at Little Bolton Hall.
1800
James

21 Jan 1816, another James Mather, a Butcher, married Alice Taylor at Bolton St Peter's.
In 1824, when Ann was born at Pendlebury, James was a weaver

James & Betty may be from Qularlton.
James and Betty lived at Turton. They were at "Rock" when James was born, and later at "Goose Cote Hill" for Isaac and Margaret. Goose Cote Hill was occupied by the Poor-law Guardians of Bolton Union before being sold in 1863.
This is NOT the James who married Esther Mason and later Hannah Howarth, (possible brother and witness to Peters marriage) as that James was literate.
1757 - 1794
James

37
37
James is probably the son of John and Mary Mather from Whitefields. The age matches, its the nearest parish (other than Bolton), and the first two children (Mary and John) are named after his parents.
In 1780 when the first John was baptised, they lived at Little Bolton, but Great Bolton in 1782 when he was buried.
~1593
James

In William's Will he names his 5 sons as "Nicholas, John, Richard, William and James" in that order, as also identifies the three latter being the younger. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume James is the youngest.

Thomas may be the brother of James Mather who married Martha Entwistle. They had the same witnesses; Thomas Vickars & registrar James Livesey.
In 1765 Thomas fell into hard times. On 15th June 1765, following Poor Law, an order (petition) was made returning Thomas, his wife Elizabeth and their daughter Mary, aged 8 months from Longworth to Turton.
Thomas was a Widower when he married Hannah Platt on 1 Jan 1781. Marg't, wife of Thomas Mather of G.B. was buried 21 Feb 1779.

James became a Muslin Manufacturer in Little Bolton, and was that in 1840 when he married Martha Bentley. His father was John Mather, a shopkeeper. His brother(?), Charles Mather was witness at their marriage.
In 1839, a license was prepared for the marriage of "James Mather" a manucacturer to "Martha Bentley", and was placed in the newspapers on 29 Aug 1840 and 5 Sep 1840
In 1841, James was recorded as a publican (40) in Dean's Gate, with his wife "Matty" (30), Sarah Nightingale (25, F.F.), John Yeoman (20, a Hatter) and William Coonnaly (30, Irish). He had presumably taken over the Inn from Matty's father William Horrocks in 1840 when he married Matty. Two years later, both Matty and her father died.
In 1845, James Mather (Widow, son of John a Shop Keeper), manufacturer of Halliwell, married Hannah Isherwood (Widower).
Aged 49 in 1851, a Cotton Manufacturer from Little Bolton.
Now married to Hannah (born 1814 from Edgworth). From Little Bolton and a Cotton Manufacturer, employingh 65 men.

There are several reasons why Margaret may be the mother of Maria, but it is still largely speculative. Mary daughter of Thomas and Marg't is the closest to 1830 for any Bolton baptism. Also if Thomas's wife died before 1841, Margaret wife of Thomas died in 1835, aged 36. This is the closest burial for a wife of Thomas Mather at St Peters, and the abode is Great Bolton (not Sharples). Finally Thomas & Margaret are not already in the larger Mather tree, so could fit.

Richard and Peter could be the son of Peter Mather, who died Turton 1765, (based on Peter being an uncommon name). Also, there is a baptism of Ann, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth of Turton in 1730.
We know from Peter's marriage and Ann's baptism, Peter was a Weaver.
In 1754 "Betty Mather - Wife of Peter Mather" died at Turton.
In 1757 it appears that Peter may have remarried Betty Mayo and had more children. However, if this is the case, then he had moved to Little Hulton and died thgere 3 Dec 1789 (aged about 85, so unlikely).

However, there is also a John Mather born about 1847 who emigrated to Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts and that could be his son.

In 1841, Jonathan Hamer, a Chair Maker, son of Thomas Hamer, a Shop Keeper, married Sarah Grove Mather, daughter of John Mather, both from Halliwell.
Jonathan's mother may have been Margaret Hamer, who was a Shop Keeper (aged 50) at Great Moor Street in 1841. His father may have been the Thomas Hamer (50 in 1841), a Shop Keeper at Black Horse Street.
NOTE: There was also Thomas and Isabell Hamer (35 & 30) Green Grocer at Church Gate, Bolton in 1841. They are too young to be Jonathan's parents.
