Mary's father was Ralph Mather and her mother was Anna Garnet.  Her maternal grandparents were Isaac Garnet and Mrs Isaac Garnet. She had two brothers and five sisters, named John, William, Alice, Martha, Elizabeth, Hannah and Dinah.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
