John's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Anna Garnet.  His maternal grandparents were Isaac Garnet and Mrs Isaac Garnet. He had a brother and six sisters, named William, Alice, Martha, Mary, Elizabeth, Hannah and Dinah.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
