William was born in 1882 in Pendleton.¹ William's father was William McMellon and his mother was Jane Mather. His maternal grandparents were Levi Mather and Sarah Aldred. He had three sisters named Annie, Mary and Eva. He was the third oldest of the four children. He had a half-sister named Jane. He died at the age of 17 in 1899.
