Betsey was born in March 1844 in Little Hulton and her baptism took place on April 21st, 1844 in Worsley.1 2  Betsey's father was James Grundy and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. She had five brothers and a sister, named Ellis, James, John, John, William and Ann.  She was the second youngest of the seven known children.
