William was born in December 1845 in Little Hulton.1  William's father was James Grundy and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Ellis, James, John, John, Ann and Betsey.  He was the youngest of the seven known children.
