James was born in 1833 in Little Hulton and his baptism took place on July 24th, 1831 in Worsley.1 2  James' father was James Grundy and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Ellis, John, John, William, Ann and Betsey.  He was the second oldest of the seven known children.
