Ann was born in October 1840 in Little Hulton and her baptism took place on August 16th, 1840 in Worsley.1 2  Ann's father was James Grundy and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. She had five brothers and a sister, named Ellis, James, John, John, William and Betsey.  She was the third youngest of the seven known children.
