Ellis was born in 1831 in Little Hulton.1   Ellis' father was James Grundy and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, John, John, William, Ann and Betsey.  He was the oldest of the seven known children.
