Henry was born in January 1854 in Little Hulton and his baptism took place on February 13th, 1854 at St. Mary (Deane).1 2  Henry's father was Levi Mather and his mother was Sarah Aldred.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Sarah (Sally) Swindels. He had three brothers and four sisters, named James, William, Levi, Jane, Harriet, Mary and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the eight children.

‌Henry and Fanny were married in a religious ceremony on June 19th, 1875 in Eccles.3
