William was born in 1863 in Pendleton and his baptism took place on November 18th, 1863 in Charlestown.1  William's father was Levi Mather and his mother was Sarah Aldred.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Sarah (Sally) Swindels. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Henry, James, Levi, Jane, Harriet, Mary and Sarah.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 25 on October 27th, 1888 in Little Hulton.2
