James Mather (James Tonge)

James was born in March 1859 in Pendleton and his baptism took place on September 11th, 1859 at St. Mary (Deane).¹²

James' father was Levi Mather and his mother was Sarah Aldred. His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Sarah (Sally) Swindels. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Henry, William, Levi, Jane, Harriet, Mary and Sarah. He was the third oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 61 in December 1920 in Leigh.³

- In 1891, James (32) was a coal miner living in Little Hulton with wife Elizabeth (31) and their three children Thomas Henry (7), Sarah Ann (3) and Ada (1).
  
  In 1901, James was a Contractor for Roofing in Coal Mine, still married to Elizabeth (both 42), now living at Culcheth, Leigh, where they had recently moved as only their last child Harold was borh there in 1900. They now had 6 children with them.
