James was born in April 1825 in Bolton and his baptism took place on April 24th, 1825 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  James' father was John Lever and his mother was Betty Mather. He had a brother and three sisters, named William, Sarah, Charlotte and Mary.  He was the oldest of the five known children.
