William was born in December 1838 in Little Hulton and his baptism took place on December 1st, 1838 in Worsley.1 2  William's father was Edmund Grundy and his mother was Ann Mather (Langshaw). He had two brothers named Edmund and Lucy. He had an adopted sister named Mary.
