Peter was born in 1878 in Bury.1  Peter's father was Edward Kay and his mother was Elizabeth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale. He had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Edward, Sarah and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the five known children. He had three half-brothers named Thomas, John and James.
