John was born in July 1869 in Bury.1  John's father was Young Matthews and his mother was Elizabeth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale. He had two brothers named Thomas and James.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named William, Peter, Edward, Sarah and Mary.  He died at the age of 3 in October 1872 in Bury.  He was buried on October 12th, 1872 in Bury.2
