Mary was born in 1875 in Bury.1  Mary's father was Edward Kay and her mother was Elizabeth Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale. She had three brothers and a sister, named William, Peter, Edward and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the five known children. She had three half-brothers named Thomas, John and James.
