Thomas' father was Young Matthews and his mother was Elizabeth Mather. His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah (Ann) Wolfendale. He had two brothers named John and James. He was the oldest of the three children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named William, Peter, Edward, Sarah and Mary.
