Mary was born in 1904.  Mary's father was James Tonge (aka Mather) and her mother was Mary Ann Ashall.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Tonge and Agnes Wane. She had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, Joseph and Agnes.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named James, Agnes and Margaret.
