Thomas was born on September 5th, 1894 in St. Helens.¹

Thomas' father was James Tonge (aka Mather) and his mother was Mary Ann Ashall. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Tonge and Agnes Wane. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Joseph, Agnes and Mary. He was the oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named James, Agnes and Margaret. He died at the age of 93 on October 29th, 1987 in Chester.
