Joseph was born in 1909.  Joseph's father was James Tonge (aka Mather) and his mother was Mary Ann Ashall.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Tonge and Agnes Wane. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, James, Agnes and Mary.  He was the youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named James, Agnes and Margaret.  He died at the age of 48 on April 1st, 1957 in Newton (Lancs).1
