James Tonge

James was born in June 1888 in Pendleton.¹

James' father was James Tonge (aka Mather) and his mother was Janet Hepburn. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Tonge and Agnes Wane. He had two sisters named Agnes and Margaret. He was the youngest of the three children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Thomas, James, Joseph, Agnes and Mary. He died as a war casualty, WW1, at the age of 29 on June 14th, 1917 in France.¹

Death Notes
- James P67512 was in the Army Reserve (Private, in the Cheshire Regiment) 12.12.15, and was posted to France four times, 20.12.16 being the last (during WW1). His service record is stamped "Died of Wounds Involved in Action" and dated 14.6.17

  In 1911, James was boarding in Middleton with Eliza Thompson and her family.
  
  Army records show James P67512 married Helena Brown (spinster) 10 June 1911 at the Baptist Chapel, Temple Street, Middleton. He was living at 48 Albert Street, Middleton in Dec 1915, and had a son George Edwin (b.30-July-1911). James died of wounds in action 14.6.17
  
  Their son George went on to marry Dorris Halliwell. He died in Rochdale in 1997.
