William was born in 1719 in Bolton and his baptism took place on August 22nd, 1719 at St. Mary (Deane).1  William's father was Ralph (Radi) Mather and his mother was Abigail Mather.  His paternal grandparents were William (Guliolius) Mather and <unknown>. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Ralph, James, Thomas, Jana, Alice and Anna.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
