Jacob, known as James, was born in August 1724 in Over Hulton and his baptism took place on August 9th, 1724 at St. Mary (Deane).1 2  James' father was Ralph (Radi) Mather and his mother was Abigail Mather.  His paternal grandparents were William (Guliolius) Mather and <unknown>. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Ralph, William, Thomas, Jana, Alice and Anna.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
