Ellen was born in March 1850 in Little Hulton.¹

Birth Notes

Ellen's father was Joshua Grundy and her mother was Betty Mather. Her maternal grandparents were James Thornley (Mather) and Margaret (Peggy) Mather. She had five brothers and six sisters, named James, Thomas, Joseph, Robert, William, Ann, Sarah, Mary, Alice, Martha and Sarah. She was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
