Ann Mather

Ann was born in 1835 in Little Hulton and her baptism took place on February 1st, 1835 in Horwich.¹²

Ann's father was Joshua Grundy and her mother was Betty Mather. Her maternal grandparents were James Thornley (Mather) and Margaret (Peggy) Mather. She had five brothers and six sisters, named James, Thomas, Joseph, Robert, William, Sarah, Mary, Ellen, Alice, Martha and Sarah. She was the oldest of the twelve children.

  In 1851, Ann was 15 and a dressmaker, a "lodger" with her mother Betty and other siblings. Joshua Grundy was head, a carter for hire.
  
  In 1853 when she married, Ann was the daughter of Joshua Mather, a Carter. However, this was Josiah Grundy, as her mother Betty never merried him.
