Mary's father was Joshua Grundy and her mother was Betty Mather. Her maternal grandparents were James Thornley (Mather) and Margaret (Peggy) Mather. She had five brothers and six sisters, named James, Thomas, Joseph, Robert, William, Ann, Sarah, Ellen, Alice, Martha and Sarah. She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.

General Notes
- Mary and Ellen's births were registered as Grundy, but named Mather and living with unmarried mother Betty Mather in 1851. By 1861, the same group were now all "Thornly"
