Joseph was born in 1837 in Little Hulton.¹

Joseph's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Swindels.  His paternal grandparents were James Topping and Alice Mather. He had six brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Levi, Andrew, John, Peter, Molly, Mally, Alice and Mary. He had two adopted brothers named Henry and James.  He died at the age of 68 on July 2nd, 1905 in Little Hulton.  He was buried in July 1905 in Little Hulton.^2 2
