James was born in 1841 in Pendleton.1  He had eight brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Levi, Joseph, Henry, Andrew, John, Peter, Molly, Mally, Alice and Mary.  He was adopted by Henry Mather & Sarah (Sally) Swindels.  He died at the age of 39 on September 7th, 1880 in Little Hulton.  He was buried in September 1880 in Little Hulton.2 2
