Thomas was born in June 1717 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on June 19th, 1717 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Thomas' father was Henry Mather and his mother was Jane Potter.  His paternal grandparents were Adam Mather and Alice Mather. He had a brother named Henry.  He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Ralph, Mary and Alice.
