Ralph was born on May 30th, 1709 in Lowton and his baptism took place on June 5th, 1709 in Ashton-under-Lyne. Ralph's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Margret Pimley.  His paternal grandparents were Adam Mather and Alice Mather. He had two sisters named Mary and Alice.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had two half-brothers named Henry and Thomas.
