Herbert's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Deborah Crompton. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joseph, Thomas, Winnifred, William, <female>, Harriet and Sarah. He was the youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 1 in September 1882 in Little Hulton. His burial was in 1882 at Wharton Lane Presbyterian.²¹
