Herbert's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Deborah Crompton.  Henry Mather and Sarah (Sally) Swindels were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joseph, Thomas, Winnifred, William, <female>, Harriet and Sarah.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 1 in September 1882 in Little Hulton.  He was buried in 1882 at Wharton Lane Presbyterian.^2 1
