William was born on June 30th, 1879 in Little Hulton.¹ William's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Deborah Crompton. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joseph, Thomas, Winnifred, Herbert, <female>, Harriet and Sarah. He was the eighth oldest of the nine children. He died at 10 months old on May 19th, 1880 in Little Hulton. His burial was in May 1880 at Wharton Lane Presbyterian.²
